Cast in a golden yellow-hued glow, the outline of two haystacks are visible in black in Lichtenstein’s Haystack #6, State II. This lithograph on Special Arjomari paper is from an edition of 13, signed and dated in the lower right. 

Based on Monet’s series of the same name which the Impressionist artist produced in 1890-1, Lichtenstein similarly explored contrasting colour shades evident in Monet’s delicate depiction of different states of natural light resulting from the shift in seasons and weather conditions. 

Haystack #6, State II evokes the late afternoon golden glow of a warm summer’s day through a lemon-yellow colour palette. In both his Cathedral and Haystack series, Lichtenstein recreated Monet’s hand-painted rendering of light and colour through the precise placement of his signature Benday dots, which made Impressionism, according to Lichtenstein, “industrial”. 

“It probably takes me 10 times as long to do one of the cathedral or haystack paintings as it took Monet to do his,” Lichtenstein once responded to critics.
