"His Interior series has remained a relevant commentary on society today and, arguably, could be seen in works by other great American creatives, such as filmmaker David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. All in quotidian domestic bliss is never quite as it seems."

Roy Lichtenstein’s 1990’s Interior series, (Bedroom, La Sortie, The Den, The Living Room, Red Lamps, Modern Room, Yellow Vase, Blue Floor) is one of his most notable print series, and is arguably the artist at his most true to his vision: the series is inspired by everyday furniture advertisements and his own photographs, so the prints are both self-referential as well as being inspired by the consumerism and American pop culture of the time.
Each of the eight prints are mis-en-scene of a quotidian domestic set up: inspired by modern home décor, Lichtenstein began the process by cutting furniture advertisements from the yellow pages of telephone directories. He enlarged the advertisements using an opaque projector, traced them, and then, after turning the tracing paper over, extensively reworked the images. These are interiors rendered in Lichtenstein’s recognisable pop art signatures: bold primary colours, delineated outlines and ben day dots.
In Interiors, each print is multi-dimensional with textural depth: Lichtenstein transforms these everyday spaces through contrasted contouring, regimented patterns, and block colouring. So, each image is simultaneously familiar yet strangely distorted.
In this series, later in his career, Lichtenstein illustrates how his artwork, which he derived from the visual vocabulary of popular culture and mass consumerism could also be sophisticated in style and meaning. In taking these quotidian mid-American everyday domestic scenes, he not only put up a mirror to society at the time but in doing so satirised the whole of his pop art genre.
His Interior series has remained a relevant commentary on society today and, arguably, could be seen in works by other great American creatives, such as filmmaker David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. All in quotidian domestic bliss is never quite as it seems.
