    Part of Roy Lichtenstein’s Cathedral series, this lithograph and screenprint on Special Ajomari paper is from an edition of 75. 

    Based on Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series, Lichtenstein produced a series of prints depicting the recurring motif of the historic building in boldly contrasting colours. Monet’s series, which comprised over thirty works, were made in Normandy in 1892-1893, and were intended to capture the distinctly different character of colour at different times of day and season throughout the year in a study of the shifting states of light. The result is over thirty works painted in a wide-ranging palette of to depict the setting sun, morning light and great weather amongst many others. 

    Lichtenstein’s Cathedral #1 is created from one aluminium plate and one screen with yellow paint applied through the lithograph and white paint screenprinted on the margin. The golden palette evokes a morning sunlight illuminating the building. The arrangement of distinct yellow dots against the white background highlights the visibility of the printing method; the repetition of circular spots evokes the mechanical nature of the printing press which emphasises and elevates the printing method over the subject. The white spacing between the yellow Benday dots defines the shape of the cathedral - its angular arches and contours of the building.
