    Roy Lichtenstein created his Cathedral series in 1969, which is based on Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series painted in 1892-1893. Whilst both artists used opposing mediums to depict the subject – Monet’s was created in oil paint, and Lichtenstein’s design produced from a lithograph and screenprint – they both used a singular recurring subject to convey the contrasting qualities of light.

    Monet’s works were painted at the site of the cathedral over a two-year span, whilst Lichtenstein worked from photographs of Monet’s oil paintings to devise his interpretation. Cathedral #6 is from an edition of 75 and is signed and numbered in pencil in the bottom right of the artwork. The dark tones of the print – a deep medley of black and blue – combine to create a nocturnal impression. Whilst the colour scheme is similar to Cathedral #2 with its foregrounding of dark blue Benday dots, the presence of black makes the shape of the cathedral more subtle in this rendering. 

    Cathedral #6 also appears in two different states both from editions of 13: Cathedral #6 State I is produced in a yellow and black colourway from two different plates and Cathedral #6 State II is rendered in red and black which conjures a dusk setting.
