    Roy Lichtenstein’s The Couple, from his seven print series, Expressionist Woodcut, is an image which alternates between pop art and expressionism. A signed print of an edition of 50 created on woodcut with embossing on Arches cover paper. 
    ‘The Couple’ invites the viewers gaze directly to this central couple of characters: the image is immediately recognisable since love and romance are some of the most prescient themes across Lichtenstein’s oeuvre. However, the closely connected couple are not the dramatic, comic book characters we have come to associate with his depiction of amour. These are abstracted figures defined by jagged angles, delineated black outlines, and bold, non-naturalist colours. 
    This is not a couple portrayed as an idealised example of love and beauty, which a lot of the artist’s early 60’s comic book work hinted at. ‘The Couple’ suggests at the complex emotional and psychological responses that these two characters must navigate along the pressures of contemporary life. This is a couple who have broken down societal barriers, openly able to express their mutual attraction, emotional frustrations and even sexuality. 
    By creating the two characters in such distorted form, Lichtenstein encourages the viewer to focus on the surface and colour rather than a specific narrative: ‘The Couple’ is an artwork that is less about being representational and more about speaking to our subconscious.
