"My work isn’t about form. It’s about seeing. I’m excited about seeing things, and I’m interested in the way I think other people see things." Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein’s Painting Series, 1984, comprises eight elaborate prints in which he reconciled contrastive themes and styles to conflate the boundaries between high and low art culture. All eight artworks use one central motif: juxtaposed fictitious picture frames to challenge the notion of artistic originality.
With his characteristic wry humour, Lichtenstein titles the print series, ‘Paintings,’ in which he skillfully uses a formal intricate composition distilled into his pop art, industrial aesthetic. Each image on initial glance is like a mirage: is this a painting, a mirror or an optical illusion? As we look further we see each artwork combines traditional painterly gestures with the detached style of commercial imagery. Lichtenstein uses his ‘Paintings’ series to explore traditional tropes of art history: for instance, we recognise the Sleeping Beauty archetype in Two Paintings:Sleeping Muse but in this artwork she’s reconfigured as a sculpture within a pop art interior.
Lichtenstein’s Paintings series features both hand-painted and machine-made patterns, manufactured through collage, woodcut, lithograph and screen print. In doing so he simultaneously celebrates and parodies the traditional notion of the artist’s hand.
The Paintings series is one of Lichtenstein’s most accomplished in that it highlighted his technical sophistication in bringing together many different forms and materials. And the series started a discourse on the nature of creating art itself: which has gone on to influence other famed contemporary artists from Richard Prince to Jeff Koons and incidentally the art historical trope, Sleeping Beauties, on which Lichtenstein’s Two Paintings: Sleeping Muse is based is the theme of this year’s prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art New York exhibition (2024).
