Campbell's Soup Old Fashioned Vegetable (F & S.II 54)
The "Old Fashioned Vegetable" design is characterised by its boldness and simplicity, using a simplistic colour scheme to provide an eye-catching contrast.
Andy Warhol’s ‘Old Fashioned Vegetable’ is a screenprint from Campbell’s Soup Can II portfolio, created in 1969. Perhaps one of Warhol’s most iconic series, the soup cans display Warhol’s talent in defying artistic norms, and propelling Pop Art into the forefront of the cultural scene. Having initially printed 10 soup cans in his previous series Campbell’s Soup Cans I, Warhol revised them again in this portfolio. By using a more advanced screen-printing technique, he was able to replicate the Campbell's product even more precisely while delving into topics of consumerism, repetition, and its consequences on 1960s American society.
The "Old Fashioned Vegetable" design is characterised by its boldness and simplicity, using a simplistic colour scheme to provide an eye-catching contrast. Some of Warhol's most valuable screen prints are included in this portfolio as well as Campbell's Soup Cans I, which was created in 1968 and greatly influenced both the artist's legacy and larger cultural influence.
The soup cans take on a provocative quality, especially when one considers the historical background of their creation. Fundamentally, Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans challenged accepted conventions in the art world and transformed preconceived ideas about what constitutes ‘good’ art. Campbell's Soup II: Old Fashioned Vegetable is regarded as the height of modern artistic genius and was instrumental in making the Pop Art movement famous. In addition to becoming iconic representations of Warhol's unique aesthetic, the Campbell's Soup cans subverted accepted notions of what constitutes artistic excellence. With these soup cans, Warhol dared to challenge social norms about what constitutes art and to reshape the creative milieu. For example, seeing a Campbell's Soup can on a billboard does not usually inspire admiration for the arts; instead, it can be interpreted as just another generic commercial. Warhol, however, challenges us to reconsider our interpretation by presenting the same image in a gallery context, which compels a deeper look. So, in his early experiments with pop art, such as Old-Fashioned Vegetable, Warhol challenges us to reconsider how we interpret certain pictures and what qualifies as "art."
