    "Similar to other works in this later period of his career, Lichtenstein creates a geometric, graphic backdrop that contrasts with the soft lines of his female lead character: as if to challenge traditional notions of femininity at the time he was painting, this female is both thinker and seductress."

    Another from Lichtenstein’s 1994 Nude series’ relief prints, Nude Reading positions this singular female figure looking out from the pages of her book, albeit undressed. Like the old masters, Picasso and Cezanne, who he so admired, Lichtenstein returns to the subject of female desire in this later period of his work. Reflective of his signature style of pop art, there are recognisable tropes; bold lines, ben day dots, vibrant colours, a comic female, here she is perplexed in thought, her hand rests on her head.
     
    Similar to other works in this later period of his career, Lichtenstein creates a geometric, graphic backdrop that contrasts with the soft lines of his female lead character: as if to challenge traditional notions of femininity at the time he was painting, this female is both thinker and seductress. We can recognise the humour and sardonic expression within Lichtenstein’s depiction – the viewer is an observer encouraged to question the sexualised portrayal of women in contemporary American culture.
