    American Indian Theme 11 is the second of a six print series made from woodcut on handmade Suzuki paper, in which Roy Lichtenstein used his pop art prism to critique mainstream cultures’ glib depiction of Native American communities. It is important to remember that during his time creating these graphic compositions, Lichtenstein was living near the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, both observing and interacting with community members firsthand and so the prints are infused with an emotional interior. 
    American Indian Theme 11 places the artist’s characteristic pop art signatures into a complex collage composition: bringing together a melange of simple, graphic shapes and familiar native american motifs in bold colourways. The artwork depicts a scene full of recognisable American Indian objects and tropes: desert landscapes, weapons and textile craftsmanship distilled through Lichtenstein’s bold pop art prism to convey the strong, graphic nature of American Indian imagery in mass media. 
    Lichtenstein purposely uses these cliche ridden objects from Native American culture to explore ideas of origin, heritage and belonging, as well as parody Western civilisations’ blinkered view of outsider traditions. The irony behind his pop art depiction is in fact encouraging the viewer to engage with the beauty of the native american indigenous community which he witnessed firsthand.
