"Lichtenstein commented, ‘When we think of still lifes, we think of paintings that have a certain atmosphere or ambiance. My still life paintings have none of those qualities, they just have pictures of certain things that are in a still life, like lemons and grapefruits and so forth. It’s not meant to have the usual still life meaning."

Roy Lichtenstein’s Still Life with Crystal Bowl, 1976, is illustrative of the innovative approach he took to his still life artworks; recontextualising the traditional art form through his pop art lens.
Still Life with Crystal Bowl, 1976, evolves the techniques and symbolism of Lichtenstein’s earlier print of the same name created in 1973. In this later print we can discern some familiar still life objects: the same decorative crystal bowl, a bottle top, a chest of drawers, a tray and even maybe a background wall. The focal crystal bowl of the earlier image is spliced and abstracted through contrastive visuals in this print, indicative of his later Mirror and Reflection series.
The viewer’s perception is immediately confounded through the slashed pictorial planes, rendered through bold diagonal stripes, swirls and shapes, ben day dots, graphic delineated outlines and bright primary colours.
Lichtenstein once commented, ‘I take a cliché and try to organise its forms to make it monumental. The difference is often not great but it is crucial. ‘
Still Life with Crystal Bowl highlights Lichtenstein’s creative vision in fusing classical motifs with stylistic techniques: he re-rendered the still life tradition, one of art history’s oldest tropes, and in doing so created still life as not just a depiction of objects but a powerful comment on art, culture and society.
