    Two Paintings: Green Lamp, 1984, is one of Lichtenstein’s eight distinctive prints from the Painting series, which explores contradictions of high and low art culture, the distinction between painting and printing, and the interplay between representation and abstraction. 
    Lichtenstein with his trademark wit, suggestively titles this print, ‘Two Paintings,’ as if to satirise both the canonised art of painting as well as his pop art genre. The print depicts a scene which challenges the viewer’s perception immediately: what looks like an interior still life scene with the green lamp on a desktop, either depicted in reality or through a mirror, is in fact the subject of the second painting. On second glance we realise the sophisticated pastiche that Lichtenstein has created: there is even a picture within the picture that looks like it could be one of his comic book girls from his earlier artworks. 
    Lichtenstein sets up an interior still life scene so reminiscent of the old master tradition, yet he distills it through his pop art prism to create a dialogue between art history and contemporary society.
