"Cubist Cello artwork was created to benefit the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s American Friends initiative: the signed screenprint on 300 gram Somerset textured paper is from an edition of 75."

Roy Lichtenstein created his innovative artwork, Cubist Cello, the year of his death in 1997 and, fittingly, it was dedicated to his lifelong passion for music. In other art works during his life, he referenced his love affair with music making, such as the Brushstrokes print or all the four part Composition series, but in Cubist Cello he reinvents his signature pop art characteristics by fusing in pictorial elements of Cubism into the composition.
Cubist Cello artwork was created to benefit the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s American Friends initiative: the signed screenprint on 300 gram Somerset textured paper is from an edition of 75.
The artwork is a collage composition which places a distinctive image of a pastel coloured cello central to the image: both the background and overlay of the image form a melange of swirling shapes, motifs, objects, creatures and even a wry reference to Lichtenstein’s own comic book girls of his 60’s era work. These figurative elements all lie within a series of geometric shapes constructed onto his signature ben day dots, heightened with rich colours and bold outlines.
Gesturing at the symphony created by music making, the artwork is a harmonious mixture of colour and form in which Lichtenstein considers the cultural traditions of music and how they can be rendered onto a canvas.
