'Two Paintings: Beach Ball is a deceptively clever artwork in which Lichtenstein requires the viewer to engage deeper with the subject matter. By juxtaposing what appears to be painterly gestures (within the print) with commercial imagery, the print wavers between the figurative, minimalist and abstract.'

Two Paintings: Beach Ball, 1984 is one of eight innovative artworks in Roy Lichtenstein’s Painting series, in which he not only evolved his own compositional style but also created a discourse around artistic originality.
In Two Paintings: Beach Ball, Lichtenstein takes the central motif of the series: juxtaposed fictitious picture frames. He starkly contrasts the two disparate imaginary frames: the first one being a pop coloured scene depicting the hint of one of the artist’s comic book blondes, who seems to be reclining by the sea and playing beach ball. The juxtaposing second image is a formal frame featuring silver fluid brushstrokes on a black and white background.
Lichtenstein uses these two opposing frames to consider some of his most permeating themes: the ‘painterly’ versus his mass commercial printing production, the boundaries between high and low culture, American consumerist culture. The top frame features his pop art signatures; bold colours, ben day dots, graphic outlines and the prominent beach ball is symbolic of the consumerist life to which American society aspires. The juxtaposing second frame uses ‘painterly’ gestures contrasting the fluid ‘brushstroke’ sweeps with the other cartoon-like detached style.
