'By placing the two chairs central to the composition, rather than just within the framework, Hockney forms a dialogue around them, giving these everyday furniture items presence and symbolism.'
David Hockney’s Walking Past Two Chairs is a signed lithograph, one of 26 prints from his Moving Focus series, in which he explores his fascination with space and perspective. One of Hockney’s favourite motifs, the humble chair, is given precedence in this print: as the title suggests it is the chairs which lead the image narrative.
By placing the two chairs central to the composition, rather than just within the framework, Hockney forms a dialogue around them, giving these everyday furniture items presence and symbolism.
Walking Past Two Chairs depicts two regular wooden high-backed chairs with bold red seating covers situated at cross angles: in front of the chairs is a small table also with a bright red surface and a vase of blooming pink flowers that has an abstracted resemblance to Hockney’s Amaryllis Vase artwork. The floor is shaded in a soft yellow and green; the fragmented, cut up shapes create an uneven texture to the viewer’s eye.
Whilst the soft colour palette recalls the light of a summer’s day, the interior scene with chairs depicted in Walking Past Two Chairs is less dramatic and distorted than the other prints in the Moving Focus series (Conversation in the Studio, Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp, Pembroke Studio Interior, Two Pembroke Studio Chairs).
In Walking Past Two Chairs, Hockney shows the evolution of his visual language in taking such an ordinary, still life and interior scene and creating a whole new narrative around it; he takes his most signature tropes; crayon drawings, naïve sketching and photographic collage and translates them all into the lithograph screenprint.
