David Hockney Walking Past Two Chairs (M.C.A.T 275)

Walking Past Two Chairs (1984) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney from his ambitious Moving Focus series of 26 prints. During this period, Hockney was deeply engaged with questions of perspective, space, and how viewers experience movement within an image. Rather than focusing on dramatic landscapes or complex narratives, he often turned to everyday objects as the central subjects of his compositions. In this print, the humble chair—one of Hockney’s recurring motifs—takes centre stage. Through careful arrangement, colour, and perspective, Hockney transforms a simple interior scene into a thoughtful exploration of perception and visual storytelling.

  • About David Hockney Walking Past Two Chairs

In Walking Past Two ChairsDavid Hockney places two wooden high-backed chairs at the centre of the composition, positioning them at intersecting angles that immediately draw the viewer’s attention. Each chair features a bold red seat, creating a vivid focal point within the otherwise softly coloured interior. In front of the chairs stands a small table with a matching red surface, topped with a vase of pink flowers that subtly echoes the floral still life seen in works such as Amaryllis Vase. The surrounding floor is rendered in soft yellows and greens, with fragmented shapes that give the surface a textured, slightly irregular appearance. Although the composition appears calm and domestic, the arrangement of objects and subtle shifts in perspective create a sense of movement, as if the viewer is passing through the room.
