David Hockney The Perspective Lesson (M.C.A.T 265) For Sale

The Perspective Lesson  is a signed lithograph by David Hockney from his experimental Moving Focus series. Throughout this body of work, Hockney explored how perspective shapes the way we perceive space, often challenging the traditional single-point perspective that had dominated Western art for centuries. Combining humour, art historical references, and visual experimentation, Hockney transformed simple everyday objects into vehicles for conceptual exploration. In The Perspective Lesson, a humble chair becomes the focal point of a playful yet thought-provoking composition, inviting viewers to reconsider the rules of representation and how images construct meaning.

  • David Hockney The Perspective Lesson

In The Perspective LessonDavid Hockney centres the composition around two wicker chairs that mirror each other across the image. One chair occupies the physical space of the room, while the other appears within a framed picture hanging on the wall directly in front of it. The printed chair, however, is dramatically crossed out with a bold red X, creating a striking visual interruption. The patterned floor beneath the central chair generates an optical illusion that further destabilises the viewer’s perception of space. The imagery subtly recalls the famous chair paintings by Vincent van Gogh, yet Hockney deliberately distorts proportions and perspective. Through this juxtaposition of patterned surfaces, simple forms, and graphic marks, the composition becomes both visually playful and conceptually intriguing.
