David Hockney Hotel Acatlan: First Day (M.C.A.T 269)

Hotel Acatlán: First Day (1984) is a lithograph by David Hockney and forms part of the Hotel Acatlán series created during a journey through Mexico. The prints were inspired by an unexpected stop in the town of Acatlán when Hockney’s car broke down while he was travelling to Mexico City for his exhibition Hockney Paints the Stage at the Museo Rufino Tamayo. This unforeseen pause allowed Hockney to sketch the surrounding hotel courtyard, transforming a spontaneous moment into a vibrant series of prints exploring place, colour, and perspective.

  • About David Hockney Hotel Acatlan: First Day

In Hotel Acatlán: First DayDavid Hockney presents a panoramic view of a hotel courtyard seen from beneath a shaded portico. Blue columns support the structure overhead, while wooden beams frame the top of the composition. Beyond the sheltered foreground lies a lush garden filled with greenery and large potted cacti, evoking the distinctive landscape of rural Mexico. Sunlight pours into the open space, illuminating the courtyard and contrasting with the cooler tones of the shaded interior. Hockney expands the scene across a wide composition, allowing the viewer to experience both interior and exterior spaces simultaneously. The vivid colour palette, featuring warm reds, greens, and blues, creates a lively atmosphere, immersing the viewer in the environment and conveying the sensation of standing within the space itself.
