'Hockney himself once remarked, ‘I am a very early riser, and I don’t like to miss that early morning light.’ Hockney merges his playful style, pop art references with the intricacy and immediacy of renaissance painters, creating nuance in the true to life details.'

Hotel Acatlan: Second Day, 1984 is the second print in a sequence by David Hockney, which depicts the previously unknown Hotel Romano Angeles in Acatlan. Hockney stumbled upon the location by chance when his car broke down on the way to his 1984 Mexico City exhibition, ‘Hockney Paints the Stage,’ and has become one of his most popular set of studies turned lithographs.
Hotel Acatlan: Second Day continues the observations and form of Hotel Acatlan: First Day yet this time is rendered from a different viewpoint of the Mexican hotel building. Hockney gives the scene verisimilitude by evoking the building and surroundings in the rich colourful palette of Mexican landscapes: we immediately can recognise the red brick arch features, formidable columns suspending the sweeping blue portico with leafy cacti plants and warm desert tones, reflective of the earthy desert landscape.
In this second depiction of the hotel location, we, the viewer, are immersed in the scene from the front perspective, looking into the building as if we are part of the vibrant colour palette, sunlight dripping into the garden-scape of this rich Mexican spot. Hockney himself once remarked, ‘I am a very early riser, and I don’t like to miss that early morning light.’ Hockney merges his playful style, pop art references with the intricacy and immediacy of renaissance painters, creating nuance in the true to life details.
Hockney utilised new print technology to create the Hotel Acatlan lithographs: the process involved the artist using rich inks to create drawings on transparent layers of plastic, called Mylar sheets. He used a different sheet for each colour, which allowed Hockney to layer the sheets upon one another, which helped him to visualise the final image outcome. Hockney really enjoyed this new mylar layering process, working with print master, Kenneth Tyler, which enabled him flexibility in his painting process and to capture the essence of this Mexican hotel environment.
Similarly to Hotel Acatlan: First Day, this Hotel Acatlan: Second Day artwork is created over two sheets to fit in the wide-angle lens: Hockney captivates the viewer with his intricate motifs, colourful expression and architectural detail. He continues his exploration of perspective and space: although this image is recognisably the same location as the first from a different angle, on multiple viewings, it could also be somewhere different or just a representation of Mexico itself. As Hockney was quick to summarise, this is not a print just ‘about a hotel.’
