    David Hockney Views of Hotel Well I (M.C.A.T 272)

    Hotel Acatlán: Two Weeks Later (1985) is a lithograph by David Hockney and forms the final work in a small series inspired by an unexpected stay near Acatlán. While travelling to Mexico City for his exhibition Hockney Paints the Stageat the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Hockney encountered the modest Hotel Romano Angeles after his car broke down. What began as a brief and accidental stop developed into a series of works exploring colour, perspective, and place. Returning to the site weeks later, Hockney revisited the scene to capture a fresh perspective on the distinctive architecture and surrounding environment.

    In Hotel Acatlán: Two Weeks Later, David Hockney presents a noticeably different viewpoint from the earlier prints in the series. The composition adopts a slightly elevated, almost bird’s-eye perspective from within the hotel’s portico, allowing the viewer to look across the courtyard and garden space. Familiar architectural features reappear, including the strong columns supporting the portico and the lush greenery surrounding the building. Unlike the previous prints, this composition introduces a solitary human figure seated within the space, adding a subtle narrative element. The vibrant palette—featuring deep reds, bright blues, greens, and yellows—intensifies the atmosphere of the scene. Hockney’s bold outlines and energetic colour blocks create a sense of movement, making the architecture appear almost fluid and transforming the everyday environment into a dynamic visual experience.
