    View of Hotel Well II (1984) is a lithograph by David Hockney and forms the second part of a three-print sequence connected to his celebrated Hotel Acatlán works within the broader Moving Focus series. Inspired by an unexpected stay near Acatlán while travelling to Mexico City, Hockney became fascinated by the architecture and atmosphere of the modest Hotel Romano Angeles. Through a series of drawings later developed into lithographs, he explored the location from multiple perspectives. These prints demonstrate Hockney’s interest in perception, movement, and how a single place can be visually transformed through shifting viewpoints.

    In View of Hotel Well II, David Hockney revisits the architectural features introduced in his earlier Hotel Acatlán prints while presenting them from a dramatically altered viewpoint. The composition depicts the interior courtyard from an elevated, almost bird’s-eye perspective, allowing the viewer to look down onto the space below. Distinctive elements of the hotel appear throughout the image: a striking red paved floor, the sweeping portico supported by blue wooden columns, and glimpses of greenery and cacti in the surrounding landscape. However, the perspective appears intentionally distorted, creating the sensation that the viewer is moving through the space rather than observing it from a fixed point. This shifting viewpoint transforms the quiet courtyard into a dynamic visual environment, emphasising Hockney’s fascination with spatial illusion and perception.
