David Hockney Caribbean Tea Time (M.C.A.T 288)

Caribbean Tea Time (1987) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney from his ambitious Moving Focus series. Created in collaboration with master printer Kenneth Tyler, the work reflects a period of intense experimentation in Hockney’s practice. While the series is known for its exploration of space and perspective, this print also draws on Hockney’s earlier interests, including stage design and photographic collage. Inspired in part by his work on The Rake’s Progress, the composition uses theatrical structure and vibrant colour to create a complex, multi-layered visual experience.

  • About David Hockney Caribbean Tea Time

Caribbean Tea TimeDavid Hockney constructs the composition around a folding screen, reminiscent of those used in theatrical set design. This device allows him to divide the image into sections while presenting multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Within the scene, familiar motifs emerge, including a wicker chair and elements of a courtyard setting, echoing imagery seen in works such as the Hotel Acatlán series. The space appears ambiguous, blending interior and exterior elements through overlapping shapes and silhouettes. Hockney employs a wide range of techniques—combining lithography with screen printing, painted elements, and collage-like layering—to create a richly textured surface. The bold palette of greens, reds, purples, and blues enhances the sense of energy, transforming the composition into a vivid and immersive visual environment.
