    David Hockney Eine (Part 1) (M.C.A.T 329)

Eine (Part I) (1991) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney and the first work in his Eine, Deux, Tres trilogy. Created later in his career, the series reflects an evolution of his long-standing interest in perception, space, and image-making. Moving beyond the earlier Moving Focus works, Hockney adopts a more complex visual language, combining abstraction with references to landscape. In Eine, he challenges traditional ways of seeing by layering fragmented forms over a natural scene, suggesting that vision is constructed rather than fixed, and constantly shaped by perspective and interpretation.

  • About David Hockney Eine (Part I)

In Eine (Part I)David Hockney presents an abstracted landscape that appears to depict a river or lakeside setting, though it is heavily obscured by geometric overlays. The composition is built from angular shapes, jagged lines, and layered planes that intersect across the surface, disrupting any clear sense of depth or perspective. Beneath these structures, softer marks and dotted textures suggest grass, water, and natural terrain. The colour palette is relatively muted, dominated by deep blues, greys, and blacks, which create a sense of atmosphere and spatial complexity. The image oscillates between representation and abstraction, making it difficult to fully locate the viewer within the scene. Through this fragmentation, Hockney encourages an active engagement, inviting viewers to reconstruct the image through their own perception.
