    “I always notice flowers,”

In one of his most beloved portfolios, Andy Warhol's artistic prowess meets the allure of blossoms in ways that defy convention. The Flowers portfolio is made up of the complete collection of Flower screen prints, each equally bold and graphic in their style. The series emerged as a radical departure from his more recognizable Pop culture subjects, offering a fresh lens through which to view his screen prints. This screenprint presents us with a psychedelic transformation of four flowers, dashed in fluorescent pink and blue, against a flattened green and black background, representing grass.

With each print, Warhol transforms these botanical wonders into bold statements that transcend traditional representations of flowers within art. From medieval manuscripts to the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood oil paintings, flowers have been used as a language throughout art history to symbolise a multitude of meaning, from desire to purity to death. Whilst Warhol’s portrayal of flowers is packed full of meaning, he marks a departure from the Old Masters before him. The bright graphic colours are unlike any other flower seen before in art history. It is a contradictory depiction of nature. Warhol strips away any naturalness, leaving behind a completely processed and artificial depiction of a flower. This screenprint provokes the viewer to consider the intersection of not only art and nature, but nature and capitalism. The flatness of the medium of screen prints has taken away any depth to the flowers, transforming them into something reminiscent of a cartoon in a commercial. The flashy, psychedelic colours are as eye-catching as the logos used for advertising, and somewhat reflect the bold bright patterns of 1960s fashion. Therefore, this series is another example of Warhol’s fascination with consumerism and popular culture. Not even nature is safe from the mass frenzy of consumerism.

Warhol has playfully commodified nature and beauty, making a provocative statement. In a room full of the most unnatural portrayals of perhaps the most natural thing to exist, the viewer feels this dichotomy. In a traditionally Warholian manner, he has combined the high art of flowers throughout art history, with the low art of a photograph taken from a magazine.
