David Hockney Small Study of Lightning (M.C.A.T. 124)

Small Study of Lightning (1973) is a vivid print from The Weather Series by David Hockney. Created in collaboration with master printer Kenneth Tyler at the renowned print workshop Gemini G.E.L., the series explored experimental techniques to capture the fleeting qualities of atmospheric phenomena. Although inspired by the climate of Los Angeles, many of the dramatic weather conditions depicted in the portfolio were imagined within the studio environment. Through bold colour, expressive mark-making, and innovative print processes, Hockney transformed meteorological effects into dynamic visual compositions that reflect his constant interest in experimentation.

  • David Hockney Small Study of Lightning

In Small Study of LightningDavid Hockney offers a compact yet striking exploration of light and atmosphere. Compared to the larger Lightning print from The Weather Series, this work presents a more abstract and colourful interpretation of a lightning strike cutting through turbulent clouds. A sharp white bolt forks through a dramatic field of red and black forms, suggesting a storm-filled sky charged with energy. The composition was produced using experimental lithographic techniques developed with Kenneth Tyler at Gemini G.E.L.. Hockney’s spontaneous approach to mark-making, sometimes applying colour with unconventional tools, allowed him to create expressive textures and layered tonal contrasts. Despite its simplicity, the image powerfully conveys the sudden intensity of lightning and the emotional atmosphere created by dramatic shifts in weather.
