    David Hockney Untitled 516 (Lilies)

Untitled No. 516 (2016) is a digital print by David Hockney, created on an Apple iPad and presented alongside the publication of A Bigger Book in 2017. One of four works exhibited to accompany this large-scale visual autobiography, the print reflects Hockney’s embrace of digital technology as a natural extension of his artistic practice. Known for constantly evolving his methods, Hockney uses the iPad to reinterpret traditional subjects. In this work, he revisits still life and floral imagery, merging painterly traditions with the immediacy and flexibility of contemporary digital tools.

  • About David Hockney Untitled 516

In Untitled No. 516David Hockney presents a vivid still life centred on a ceramic vase filled with an abundant arrangement of flowers and foliage. Unlike some of his other digital works featuring transparent vessels, this composition uses a solid form, placed on a blue chequered tablecloth that introduces structure and pattern. The bouquet bursts with greens and violets, rendered through energetic, expressive marks that suggest movement and vitality. The background remains relatively sparse, with subtle red cross-hatching adding texture without distracting from the central subject. Created on an Apple iPad, the image combines fluid digital brushstrokes with a strong sense of composition. The contrast between bold colour and simplified space enhances the immediacy of the scene while maintaining clarity and balance.
