“I’m fascinated by boys who spend their lives trying to be complete girls, because they have to work so hard - double-time - getting rid of all the tell-tale male signs and drawing in all the female signs… It’s hard work to look like the complete opposite of what nature made you and then to be an imitation woman of what was only a fantasy woman in the first place.” Andy Warhol

Ladies and Gentlemen is a portfolio created by Andy Warhol in 1975. The series featured ten screenprints of a variety of models, that were scouted at the Gilded Grape, a Manhattan bar that was known to be a local hangout spot for Black and Latinx transgender and drag communities. Warhol took polaroids of the chosen fourteen sitters at his studio, resulting in over 500 photographs. The sitters of the portfolio remained anonymous to those outside the community until 2014, as the Andy Warhol Foundation re-discovered the identities of thirteen of the fourteen models.

This sitter as been identified as ‘Iris’, who also features in F&S II.131. Iris stares directly towards the viewer as she holds her arm above her head, framing her face. Warhol uses blocks of colours to emphasise feminine details, such as a wash of bright red over her fingernails and lips, and two yellow blocks over her eyelids, echoing the glamour of drag make-up. Her face is coloured in a warm brown, whilst small blocks of red, blue and yellow are scattered around her profile like confetti. Iris sports a similar sultry persona, echoing Andy Warhol’s previous muse Marilyn Monroe. Warhol created his Mick Jagger portfolio within the same year, and his equal treatment and inclusivity of the two different subject matters with equal artistic style suggests Warhol sees both Mick Jagger and trans women and drag queens with equal respect and fascination.
