“Drag queens are living testimony to the way women used to be, the way some people still want them to be, and the way some women will actually want to be. Drags are ambulatory archives of ideal movie star womanhood. They perform a documentary service, usually consecrating their lives to keeping the glittering alternative alive and available for (not-too-close) inspection.” Andy Warhol

This screenprint is one of ten in Andy Warhol’s aptly named Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio. Commissioned by Italian art dealer Luciano Anselmino, at a time of avid gay rights movements and increasing sexual liberation, Warhol embraced the queer community and the figures within it, whilst highlighting key socio-political issues through the identities of some of his activist sitters. Warhol was encouraged to keep the sitters ‘anonymous’, avoiding the big names of the drag and transgender community. The sitters Warhol chose were local to New York, scouted at the Gilded Grape club and immortalising the trans community forever, placed in the same oeuvre of Warhol’s other stars, such as Mick Jagger or Marilyn Monroe.

The sitter for this screenprint has been identified as Wilhelmina Ross. Ross was likely Warhol’s favourite sitter for this portfolio, as 73 paintings, based on 7 portraits were taken of her on Warhol’s polaroid camera. Furthermore, 29 drawings and 5 collages were made of Ross. Ross was a leading star of a drag theatre group during her brief moment as Warhol’s muse. In this print, Ross is depicted in profile, resting her head on her hand. Warhol has coloured her face in a warm brown tone, which compliments the blocks of red, blue and yellow colours transposed across her lips, eyes and nails.

This portfolio shines a spotlight on to a group that was ostracised from main stream society. Warhol aligns these previously anonymous women alongside a collection of ultra-celebrities, such as Mick Jagger and Marilyn Monroe, telling us both groups are as equally deserving of respect and admiration.
