    David Hockney Disintegration (M.C.A.T 24)

Disintegration (1963) is one of the later etchings in A Rake’s Progress, the influential sixteen-print series by David Hockney. Inspired by the eighteenth-century narrative cycle created by William Hogarth, Hockney reinterprets the story through the perspective of a young artist discovering New York in the early 1960s. The series follows the emotional journey of Hockney’s semi-autobiographical ‘Rake’ figure, exploring themes of identity, freedom, and alienation. Within this narrative arc, Disintegration marks a psychological turning point, where the optimism and curiosity of earlier scenes give way to introspection, vulnerability, and the gradual unraveling of the protagonist’s sense of self.

  • About David Hockney Disintegration

In DisintegrationDavid Hockney intensifies the emotional tension within A Rake’s Progress. The familiar protagonist appears only from the shoulders upward, identifiable by his distinctive glasses and dark hair. Positioned beside him is a billboard advertisement for whisky, depicting an empty glass resting on a patterned tablecloth. This commercial image introduces themes associated with 1960s consumer culture while also suggesting emotional emptiness and possible escapism. Hockney combines etching with aquatint to create a sparse and atmospheric composition, allowing subtle tonal variations and expressive lines to convey mood. The largely blank background heightens the sense of isolation surrounding the figure, directing attention to his introspective gaze. Through this restrained composition, Hockney captures a moment of psychological fragility, emphasising melancholy, vulnerability, and the gradual erosion of personal identity.
