David Hockney Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon, and a Blue Wash (M.C.A.T 212)

Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon, and a Blue Wash  (1978–80) is part of David Hockney’s Water Lithographs series, a portfolio of eleven prints exploring the representation of swimming pools. Created following his move to Los Angeles in 1964, the series reflects a transformative period in his life and practice. Inspired by the city’s light, openness, and cultural freedom, Hockney repeatedly reworks a single poolside composition. In this version, he combines multiple techniques to create a more layered and expressive image, blending structure with spontaneity to evoke both the physical and emotional qualities of water.

  • About David Hockney Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon, and a Blue Wash

In this lithograph, David Hockney presents a swimming pool scene animated through a combination of blue wash, crayon marks, and fine linear detail. The white diving board stretches across the composition, acting as a stable visual anchor against the fluidity of the water below. Hockney overlays the pool with spontaneous, wavy crayon lines and areas of crosshatching, which evoke the shimmering effect of light refracting on the surface. The layered techniques introduce texture and variation, enhancing the sense of depth and movement within an otherwise still composition. The interplay between the soft blue wash and the darker, more energetic lines creates a dynamic tension between calm and motion. This balance allows the image to hover between representation and abstraction, capturing the fleeting, ever-changing qualities of water.
