    In the Studio, 2019, by David Hockney is part of his The Arrival of Spring: Normandy series, which he created from his new hometown, the Beuvron-en-Auge village in the Normandy region of France. He moved in 2019 to the 17th century rustic country house, Le Grande Coeur which sits in 12 acres and converted one of two surrounding barns into his studio. Continuing to create this series that features Ipad paintings and inkjet works on paper, throughout the pandemic, as the seasons started to change, Hockney uses his new home, gardens and interiors as motifs.
    In the Studio represents the artist relishing in the isolation of his surroundings, as confined to his studio, he can devote himself even deeper into his love of art and creating art. In the Studio directly relates back to many of the interior based artworks from Hockney’s groundbreaking, Moving Focus series, including Pembroke Studio Interior, Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp, which depict Hockney’s singular vision of line and his ‘spatial’ perspective.
    In the Studio is a simple composition that depicts the inside of his barn turned studio set up: there is an easel featuring a work in progress of nature, a trolley featuring inks, pens, brushes, another table with more ‘tools.’ There are two small wicker chairs dotted around the studio, as well as previous artworks lined up against the wall, a ladder, a door that looks out onto the surrounding vibrant gardens and a set of stairs leading up to another floor.
    The scene is reminiscent of a typical working artist’s studio, yet Hockney utilises graphic and curvilinear lines, to create form and multi dimension as if the viewer is also immersed in the studio space.  Similarly to the Moving Focus series, Hockney plays with space and perspective: the stairs appear to lead up to an attic but the viewer cannot see anything at the top of the stairs. The miniature bottles, inks, paintbrushes, pens are created in different shapes, sizes and detail giving life to the studio and are in juxtaposition to the graphic lines of the studio space.
    Hockney clearly depicts the sense of being alone in the artwork but strips away the loneliness that isolation can so often bring with it, celebrating the life of the artist.
