David Hockney No Fire
'I am interested in all kinds of pictures however they are made, with cameras, with paint paintbrushes, with computers, with anything.’ Hockney
In No Fire, 2020, an Ipad painting printed on paper, Hockney takes the same central motif as in A Bigger Fire: the fireplace at his new 17th century rustic country home, Le Grande Coeur, in Normandy France yet this depiction is the interior space without the lit fire. The same beige slab tiling floor and dark red brick at the top of the fireplace feature as in A Bigger Fire, yet here the edge of the fireplace is cropped so the viewer’s gaze is focused on the dark black abyss in the centre of the image. In No Fire, the image isn’t immediately clear, it looks as if a fire has previously been lit and the area is messy from the ashes and remnants: whilst A Bigger Fire was earthy and heartwarming, this No Fire image suggests something more ominous, perhaps the broken, dark place the world was going through during the global pandemic. -
