About David Hockney Bora Bora
In Bora Bora, Hockney renders the landscape through sweeping, spontaneous lines that suggest the movement of wind and water. Using diluted lithographic ink (known as tusche) he achieves loose, painterly strokes reminiscent of artists such as Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who employed similar techniques to create expressive imagery. Land and sea are distinguished not only through colour but through contrasting rhythms of line and shape. The print continues Hockney’s long-standing fascination with depicting water, a subject he described as “a formal problem” because of its constant movement and shifting appearance. While many works in the 1979 Tyler Graphics portfolio focus on portraits of friends, Bora Bora stands apart as the only landscape; its sparse composition and abstract quality emphasising atmosphere, sensation, and the artist’s adventurous approach to printmaking.
