David Hockney Green Bora Bora (M.C.A.T. 214)

Green Bora Bora (1979) is a striking lithograph by David Hockney inspired by the tropical beauty of Bora Bora. Known for its vivid colours and serene landscapes, the island becomes a perfect setting for Hockney’s exploration of water, movement, and line. Created using expressive brushwork and diluted lithographic ink, the print captures the gentle rhythm of waves and the warmth of the Pacific environment. Produced as part of a portfolio with Tyler Graphics, the artwork reflects Hockney’s continual experimentation with printmaking techniques. Through minimal forms and dynamic marks, the composition transforms a simple landscape into a modern, expressive study of nature.

  • Aboud David Hockney Green Bora Bora

In Green Bora Bora, Hockney explores the challenge of representing water through expressive lines and fluid colour. Using diluted lithographic ink, known as tusche, he creates loose brushstrokes reminiscent of the techniques used by Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The composition differentiates land and sea through contrasting colours and rhythmic line patterns, capturing the movement of wind and waves across the island landscape. Hockney had long been fascinated with depicting water, previously experimenting with the theme in works such as Lithograph of Water(1978). Produced within the 1979 Tyler Graphics portfolio, this print stands apart as the only landscape in the series. While other works portray friends and muses like Henry GeldzahlerGreen Bora Bora instead highlights Hockney’s interest in atmosphere, abstraction, and the expressive possibilities of lithography.
