Electric Chair (F & S. II 74)
‘Maybe everything isn’t always so fabulous in America. It’s time for some death. This is what’s really happening.’
Electric Chair (F&S II.74) is a screenprint created in 1971, as part of Andy Warhol’s electric chairs series. This portfolio was part of Warhol’s wider Death and Disaster series, which explored the darker side of the latter half of the twentieth century. This series is perhaps the darkest of Warhol’s death and disaster portfolio, as it depicts an overt symbol of death, juxtaposed with Warhol’s garish Pop art palette of yellow and blue.
In 1962 – the year in which the Death and Disaster series came about, Warhol’s collaborator, Henry Geldzahler invited the artist to consider the sinister undercurrent of the United States: ‘Maybe everything isn’t always so fabulous in America. It’s time for some death. This is what’s really happening.’ Here, Warhol masterfully encapsulates the essence of death and violence that was highly prevalent within the media during this period. Warhol was fascinated by the American masses which were seemingly violence-hungry, avidly consuming media surrounding the death of JFK and stars such as Marilyn Monroe. The duality of public interest, from violence to celebrity culture, is captured throughout Warhol’s oeuvre.
