Love (F & S. II 310)
"The screenprint is both lovingly tender and sexually charged..."
This screenprint is the first from an edition of three within Andy Warhol’s Love portfolio. The screenprint was created in 1983, and comes as an edition of 100.
The screenprint is both lovingly tender and sexually charged, as the two titular lovers embrace. The woman’s nude body is outlined in a mixture of red, yellow and black lines, giving her a ghostly and more transient presence in comparison to the nude male in the background. Thus, the lover seems to grasp both the physical form and the imagined figure, possibly reflecting the transient nature of romantic relationships.
Despite the sexual nature of the print, the overwhelming impression is one of intimacy rather than explicits, as Warhol crops the genitals, unlike in his previous series Sex Parts, to suggest the encounter is private and affectionate.
