Mao (F & S. II 90)
‘The only picture they have is of Mao Zedong. It’s great. It looks like a silkscreen.’ Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol’s Mao series, created in 1972, is a significant and thought-provoking body of work that reflects Warhol’s unique approach to both celebrity culture and political iconography. The series emerged during a politically charged period following President Nixon’s historic visit to China and is emblematic of Warhol’s fascination with fame, propaganda, and the mass production of images. By juxtaposing Western consumer culture and kitschy colour palette with a symbol of Eastern communism, Warhol underscored how powerful images transcend cultural boundaries. Warhol employed his silk-screening technique to create variations in colour and texture, resulting in a series where each portrait has unique distortions and layered brushstrokes. These distortions may symbolise the fractured perception of powerful figures, whose images are endlessly replicated and modified. The series continues to be relevant in discussions on how political figures are visually consumed, reproduced, and reinterpreted globally. -
