$ (F & S. II 285)
The Dollar Sign series becomes both a critique of consumer culture and a reflection of Warhol’s own role within it.
Andy Warhol's Dollar Sign portfolio engages with the central themes of Pop Art by transforming a mundane and globally recognisable image into a statement on mass production, value, and desire. As Arthur Danto observed, “Warhol’s dollar sign is as much an emblem of America as the flag.” Through this portfolio, Warhol offers a provocative exploration of the relationship between art and money, embodying the irony and ambiguity that define much of his work. His art leaves viewers questioning whether it critiques, celebrates, or does both simultaneously in relation to its subject matter.
This print features nine dollar signs in a multitude of colours,set against a vibrant red background, evoking the exaggerated colours of advertising. This choice underscores Warhol’s commentary on the commodification of art, as he blurs the boundary between high art and commercialism. Reflecting his keen awareness of this irony, Warhol once remarked, “I like money on the wall. Say you were going to buy a painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and put it on the wall. Then when someone visited you, the first thing they would see is money on the wall.” In this way, the Dollar Sign series becomes both a critique of consumer culture and a reflection of Warhol’s own role within it. -
