Sausages
"It also taps into British cultural identity: sausages are a cornerstone of the traditional working-class meal, yet here, they’re elevated, flattened into concept, abstracted into design, and offered as a piece of fine art."
With Sausages (1999), Damien Hirst turns the ordinary into the iconic, transforming a humble butcher’s staple into a clinically styled art object. Part of his acclaimed The Last Supper series, Sausages embodies Hirst’s enduring obsession with the systems that shape our consumption, health, and perception of value.
In this work, the word “Sausages” is presented in bold, minimalist typography, echoing the sterile, over-designed packaging of pharmaceuticals. But rather than a medical formula, we’re confronted with a familiar, everyday food, an ironic substitution that invites viewers to question the fine line between nourishment and prescription, pleasure and necessity.
Created in a signed, limited edition of 150, Sausages speaks directly to Hirst’s Pop Art lineage, drawing parallels with Warhol’s soup cans and the visual seduction of branded goods. It also taps into British cultural identity: sausages are a cornerstone of the traditional working-class meal, yet here, they’re elevated, flattened into concept, abstracted into design, and offered as a piece of fine art.
Unlike his more visceral installations, Sausages delivers its message with restraint. There’s no spectacle, just a blank, almost bureaucratic presentation of language as label. This simplicity is its strength, reinforcing the idea that meaning can be manufactured as easily as a mass-produced product.
For collectors, Sausages represents a key moment in Hirst’s printmaking, a time when his graphic clarity sharpened into conceptual brilliance. As works from The Last Supper series continue to grow in both critical and market acclaim, Sausages stands out as one of the most wryly evocative and culturally loaded entries.
