Salad
"Hirst challenges the viewer to reconsider how modern society mediates nourishment, not through experience or ritual, but via branding and commodified consumption."
Damien Hirst, Salad (1999–2000) is a crisp, concept-driven silkscreen print from the artist’s iconic Last Supper series. Known for his provocative engagement with themes of mortality, consumerism and belief, Hirst inverts traditional religious symbolism by substituting sacred references with the banal terminology of everyday meals, here, the word Salad presented in a pharmaceutical-style format.
Stripped of imagery and emotion, the print’s sterile aesthetic mimics the design language of medical packaging, lending the humble dish an almost clinical detachment. Through this visual appropriation, Hirst challenges the viewer to reconsider how modern society mediates nourishment, not through experience or ritual, but via branding and commodified consumption.
Editioned at 150, Salad is among the more visually restrained yet conceptually rich pieces in the Last Supper portfolio. It speaks directly to Hirst’s ongoing interrogation of the superficial language that surrounds health and wellbeing, all delivered with his trademark irony.
