Meir is transformed into blocks of colour, with each one gradually merging into each other; there is an array of purple, pink, red, yellow, and brown.

Golda Meir was an Israeli Politician who was assumed the role of the fourth prime minister following the death of Levi Eshkol. She served in this role from 1969 to 1974 and was the first and only female head of government of Israel. Described as the ‘Iron Lady’ of Israel, Meir was a controversial leader, especially after the outbreak of the Yom Kippur war in 1973, which eventually led to her resignation. This print is part of  Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century portfolio, created in 1980. Warhol referred to his series as ‘Jewish geniuses’, and he depicted a variety of Jewish figures, ranging from areas from politics to literature to philosophy to music. Meir is one of three women depicted in this portfolio.

Meir is given a Pop Art makeover buy the King of Pop Art himself – Andy Warhol. Like the rest of the portraits in this series, Meir is transformed into blocks of colour, with each one gradually merging into each other; there is an array of purple, pink, red, yellow, and brown. On the surface of the print, Warhol has hand-drawn dynamic yellow and orange lines over the details of Meir. This screenprint is a testament of Warhol’s ability to take a figure with a serious political history and turn her into a playful Pop Art icon. This not the first time Warhol has chosen Meir as his subject, as he depicted her in a screenprint from 1973. Fame and the milieu around celebrities fascinated Warhol. The artist frequently included well-known people in his prints; Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger are two such examples. But in this collection, Warhol eschews the flash and glamour of his typical themes in favour of drawing notable people who have instead had a profound impact on society.
