Watermelon (F & S. II 199)
The vibrant colour blocks featured in works like Space Fruit are unmistakably Warholian.
Watermelon is a screenprint created by Andy Warhol in 1979 as part of his wider Space Fruit: Still Lifes series. The print depicts a Pop Art transformation of a watermelon into a rich blue colour, juxtaposed against a rich red and pink background. This print is one of the most detailed out of the portfolio, as Warhol adds a layer of texture to the surface of the watermelon.
In the late 1970s, Warhol shifted his focus from celebrity portraits to silkscreening more still lifes—an often underappreciated aspect of his oeuvre that deserves recognition. These still lifes exemplify Warhol’s signature style, which would leave a lasting impact on fashion, art, and pop culture. The vibrant colour blocks featured in works like Space Fruit are unmistakably Warholian. As Vogue contributing editor Lex Blimes aptly notes, "Warhol didn’t so much predict the future as create it."
