Saint Apollonia (F & S. II 330)
"Warhol mimicked the cracks of the original icon, transforming a modern Pop Art piece into an appropriated cultural artefact."
Saint Apollonia is part of a portfolio of four screenprints executed by Warhol in 1984, of the Virgin Martyr Apollonia. The screenprint appropriates an image of the namesake Catholic saint taken from Pierro Del Francesco’s mosaic altar piece. Appollonia’s story is an allegory of struggle and sacrifice, after the saint was tortured after an uprising against Christianity. In Warhol’s depiction she is holding up a tooth held in pliers, representing not only her torture but symbolises her as the patron saint of dentistry. She is placed in front of a vibrant red background, in which Warhol mimicked the cracks of the original icon, transforming a modern Pop Art piece into an appropriated cultural artefact.
Saint Apollonia may at first seem like an unlikely muse for Warhol, an artist so closely associated with the consumer and celebrity driven society in the second half of the 20th century. However, suffering is a theme that occurs repeatedly throughout Warhol’s deceptively brightly coloured oeuvre, for example within his Death and Disaster series. Furthermore, Warhol was fascinated with the modern day celebrity veneration, and by depicting Saint Apollonia he is returning to the original venerated icon.
