Camouflage (F & S. II 408)
"This clash of colour and pattern is visually engaging and disorienting, enhancing the sense of irony."
Andy Warhol’s Camouflage series, created in 1987, is his last print series created before his death. Camouflage directly evokes the military, hinting at underlying themes of war, conflict, and violence. Yet, Warhol’s colourful approach dilutes this, perhaps making a statement about the desensitisation to such imagery or how consumer culture can mask darker realities. Warhol’s camouflage patterns are not restricted to traditional military greens and browns. Instead, he employs vibrant shades of pink, red, orange, and neon tones, which are at odds with the pattern’s traditional purpose. This clash of colour and pattern is visually engaging and disorienting, enhancing the sense of irony. -
