The Great British Spraycation

Following a week of speculation, Banksy confirmed on his official Instagram page that the spait of graffiti and street  installations that have adorned Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and parts of Suffolk are indeed produced by him. Prior to these works, the artist’s last street piece appeared on a wall of the famous Reading prison and his evolving style can be seen to carry through into these more recent pieces,

Totalling 10 unique works, this flurry of activity is one of the artist’s most prolific number of street works produced at the same time. Executed with typical Banksy style and humour, the collection, titled “A Great British Staycation” can be seen to be inspired both from current affairs and the history of the locations selected.

Ranging from the superb boat installation “We’re all in the same Boat” (which can be read as a commentary on the looming environmental crises) to the archetypal Banksy rat enjoying a cocktail on the beach whilst lounging in a deckchair, the artist’s effortless style and wit are prevalent throughout.

Other works that appeared include a charming mural of bubblegum pink hermit crabs renting shells with the caption “Luxury rentals only”, the local model village with an installation of a house stating “Go big or go home” and, referencing the historic amusement arcades an enormous arcade style grabber crane above local benches. Elsewhere, a giant seagull can be seen attempting to steal “chips” from a skip, a child with a crowbar next to a sandcastle and a lifted paving slab. three people on top of a bus shelter: two dancing and another playing an accordion.dancers on bus stop and a children being flung off of an inflatable boat as they adult who pumps it up holds a can of lager. Rounding off the plentiful surprise, there is also the toying of the statue of major of King’s Lynn Frederick Savage with added tongue and what appears to be an ice cream in his hand.

Brilliantly Banksy, the works capture and showcase an artist at his prime and in an ascension that seemingly is limitless. Perfectly executed, the pieces demonstrate an almost innate ability to capture the imagination of the public and instantly resonate with those that view them.
