    Andy Warhol Kimiko (F & S II.237)

Kimiko (1981) is a glamorous screenprint portrait by Andy Warhol depicting influential Pop Art collector Kimiko Powers. Together with her husband John Powers, she assembled one of the most significant private collections of contemporary Pop Art. Created during Warhol’s prolific period of commissioned portraits, the work reflects his enduring fascination with style, identity, and patronage. In portraying a major supporter of the movement, Warhol closes a compelling circle between artist, collector, and the cultural phenomenon that defined his career.

  • About Andy Warhol Kimiko

In this striking composition, Kimiko appears dressed in a traditional kimono, her hair adorned with ornate Japanese kanzashi. Warhol heightens the drama through saturated colour and graphic contrast, lending the portrait a cinematic glamour reminiscent of his earlier depictions of Hollywood icons. Kimiko herself recalled that Warhol wished to create a new portrait each time she changed her hairstyle, underscoring his fascination with surface, transformation, and image. As early and avid collectors of Pop Art — including works such as Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans — the Powers played a crucial role in shaping the movement’s legacy. Here, Kimiko shifts from patron to subject, securing her own place within Warhol’s oeuvre. The collage-like colour effects echo portraits such as Marcia Weisman and Ladies and Gentlemen, reinforcing Warhol’s signature 1980s style.
