    Meaning & History

“Everybody has their own America, and then they have pieces of a fantasy America that they think is out there but they can’t see … You live in your dream America that you’ve custom-made from art and schmaltz and emotions just as much as you live in your real one.” Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol created Uncle Sam, a signed screen print on Lenox Museum board, in 1981 for the Myths portfolio. The artwork, part of a limited edition of 200, features Uncle Sam, a personification created to represent the US government. This print, a notable emblem of American patriotism, extends beyond popular culture to delve into the realms of politics and propaganda. The depiction of Uncle Sam highlights Warhol’s deep connection with America, particularly in relation to his critique of American culture and everyday life. Warhol’s art incisively reflects the major cultural concerns of post-World War II America.

Widely recognized for his role in World War I and II recruitment posters, Uncle Sam is depicted as a slender figure adorned in a multicoloured top hat featuring an American flag pattern and a swallow-tailed coat, rendered in Warhol's distinctive visual style. Unlike other prints in the Myths series, such as those depicting Dracula and Howdy Doody, which are set against darker backgrounds, Warhol employs a light yellow wash to highlight Uncle Sam's patriotic attire. Additionally, Warhol adds gestural red and blue silkscreen accents across the figure’s face and torso, a technique he frequently used to emphasise the focal points of his images. This composition underscores Uncle Sam’s role as a symbolic embodiment of the United States, with the colours of the American flag prominently featured. The piece is imbued with a palpable sense of American vibrancy.
