This large Egyptian bronze cat dates to the Late Period or Ptolemaic Period, when feline imagery associated with the goddess Bastet became particularly prominent. Life-sized bronze examples are considerably less common than the smaller votive figures produced in greater numbers, while the survival of the blue lapis lazuli inlays around the eyes further distinguishes the present work.

Hollow cast and sensitively modelled, the cat sits upright with its forepaws placed together and its tail curving forward around the proper right side. The full chest, rounded haunches and carefully articulated paws convey a close observation of feline anatomy. Erect ears and recessed almond-shaped eyes give the head an alert expression, heightened by the surviving lapis lazuli inlays. Traces of an incised broad collar remain at the back of the neck, with a rectangular tenon positioned below.

Cats were domesticated in Egypt by at least the Middle Kingdom and subsequently became closely associated with Bastet, a goddess connected with protection, fertility, domestic wellbeing and good health. Her principal cult centre was at Bubastis in the eastern Nile Delta, while extensive cat necropoleis have also been discovered at Saqqara. Bronze feline figures were dedicated at sanctuaries as votive offerings; some hollow examples may also have served as containers for mummified remains.

The sculpture belongs to a small group of substantial bronze cats whose naturalistic modelling and elaborate inlaid decoration indicate considerable technical and material investment. A useful comparison is the smaller bronze statuette of Bastet in the Louvre, inventory number E 2533, dated to the reign of Psamtik I. The present cat is further distinguished by its long private provenance: photographs dating from circa 1925 show it displayed within the same family collection and upon the wooden mount retained today.

A detailed condition report is available upon request.
