Damien Hirst’s Psalm series takes its inspiration from the butterfly compositions of his well-known Kaleidoscope paintings. The wings are carefully arranged into symmetrical patterns, creating an effect reminiscent of stained-glass windows and mandalas.

Hirst has used butterflies in his work since 1989, drawn to their associations with beauty, fragility, life and death. The wider Kaleidoscope series began in 2001, after he came across a Victorian tea tray decorated with intricate patterns of butterfly wings.

The Psalm works developed from this idea, with each print named after a Psalm from the Old Testament. In Diligam te, Domine, the rich colours and glossy surface give the work an almost stained-glass quality, bringing together many of the themes that run throughout Hirst’s work: beauty, mortality and spirituality.

This particular version was produced in a small edition of just 25, and is signed and numbered by the artist.
