  • Banksy Flags Meaning & History

Flag (Silver and Gold) references the famous photo “Raising the Flag” by American photographer Joe Rosenthal.

The Flags series by Banksy and depicts a group of children and teenagers standing on top of a burnt out car whilst hoisting the American Flag. Wearing hoodies and other streetwear, the youth look forgotten, discarded and disenfranchised. The gesture, the raising of the flag, almost seems an act of reclaiming their territory, of standing up and taking back the streets and, thus, the world itself. As the viewer, we wonder what has happened to the car -  could it be an urban warzone or perhaps the vision of an apocalyptic future?
Flag (Silver and Gold) references the famous photo “Raising the Flag” by American photographer Joe Rosenthal in which  six American soldiers lift the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima, in World War II. The unsigned edition of 1000 is printed on silver Chromolux paper, the piece itself has a mirrored, otherworldly effect and recalls the silver screen, with almost a cinematic quality, through the unusual choice of material. The signed edition of 112 is printed on gold Chromolux paper, the piece itself has a mirrored, otherworldly effect and recalls the golden age of the cinema screen, with almost a film-like quality, through the unusual choice of material. Banksy has used the motifs of the military and children across his works representing the clash of the innocence of youth with the horrors of war.Jack and Jill, in particular highlights this and other prints including Have a Nice Day, Happy Choppers and Napalm all illustrate Banksy's ability to comment on the machinery of war placing it within the context of our 21st century reality.
