    Andy Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century portfolio is a 1980 series of ten prints, one of which is Sarah Bernhardt. Sarah Bernhardt was a French stage actress who appeared in plays in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was one of the early prominent actresses to make sound recordings and perform in motion pictures. She has been described as ‘the most famous actress the world has ever known’ and became so well-known across Europe and America that she was nicknamed ‘The Divine Sarah’. She also became the face of the Art Nouveau art movement after becoming the muse of Alphonse Mucha. Due to Warhol’s obsession with glamour and celebrity culture, Bernhardt seems like the perfect muse for Warhol, as she was arguably the first ‘it girl’, long before Marilyn Monroe or Jackie Kennedy. Here, Warhol is experimenting with notions of ephemerality vs the lasting of a legacy.

    By this point in the 1980s, Warhol had perfected his screen-printing technique, which is evident in his ability to playfully layer colours atop one another whilst maintaining photographic detail of faces through his line drawings. Bernhardt’s beautiful and recognisable face is placed beneath three blocks of red and blue, which are layered above each other at different angles. Warhol has hand drawn extra detail in yellow above the blue section, which compliments beautifully and adds a vibrant and dazzling feel to the print. The bright colours transform a woman who has been an icon in the past to an icon of the dizzying fervour of the 1980s, bringing the photograph of her to life once more.
